Canadian Australian Chamber of Commerce: Event Review

I attended ‘Embracing Disruption as an Opportunity’ on the morning of Wednesday 25th of July. The event was run by the Canadian Australia Chamber of Commerce (CACC) in conjunction with C2. The purpose of the event was to promote C2 as well as creating an environment to network, engage and explore ideas that enhance your business.

The breakfast event was held at Cargo Hall on South Wharf Promenade and ran from 7.30am-10am. I arrived at 7.30am with the room already packed with Canadian Australian Chamber of Commerce members. Majority of the attendees were members of the Canadian Australia Chamber of Commerce. There was a long table filled with breakfast items including hot and cold pastries, fruit and muesli as well as tea, coffee and orange juice on offer.

Previously, I have attended another CACC event back in May and the selection of food was absolutely delicious. The Canadian Australian Chamber of Commerce do not fail to disappoint with their catering.

This was an opportunity to network with the attendees. There were a mix of small business owners such as accounting firms and leadership coaches to large corporate firms such as Telstra, Porsche and Melbourne Airport.

 

After 30 minutes of mingling with the attendees and eating breakfast. We were moved to a dark room seated in a circular format with the panel standing in the middle of the audience. There were four members on the panel. The panel included the Martin Enault, the CEO of C2, Michele Levine, the CEO of Roy Morgan, Mike McGrath, the Chief Marketing Officer at PwC and finally Laura Anderson, the Chairman of SVI Global.

The panel discussed some interesting insights into the world of business and being disruptive.

 

The CEO and host of the event, Martin Enault then gave us an insight into what the ‘C2 Experience’ was.  As there was up to 80 attendees, we were asked questions about the future of work and what elements of business would be most affected by digitisation. This gave the attendees an opportunity to discuss our opinions with each other.

 

The C2 experience wants to explore and transform the way people think about the role of creativity in a business.  C2 is hosting a Melbourne first event on October 17-19th.  The event is priced at $2495 for the 3 day event.

 

Overall the event was entertaining to attend.  It wasn’t really much of a networking event but more of an introduction to C2. It was an entertaining to gain some insight into C2. There was quite a hype around C2 and their way around networking events. It was great to learn a bit more about what C2 does and how they run these type of events.

I really enjoyed listening to the speakers as they were quite high level in their roles and found their discussions interesting. However I don’t think I will be paying $2495 for a 3 day networking event in October.

VCCI Speed Networking: Event Review

Lachlan and I attended the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry ‘Fast Forward Speed Networking’ event.

The event was held on Wednesday 13th of June from 5.30pm-8pm. Located at the RACV City Club on Bourke Street, it was a perfect venue for a large networking event.

The Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, otherwise known as VCCI host regular networking events throughout the year for like-minded individuals to meet and form connections.

Business Growth Partners are members of the organistion. We often attend their events as we find its a great way to meet people and form meaningful business relationships.

The idea of speed networking is that you have two minutes to chat to the business contact in front of you. Before moving onto the next business contact.

This quick 120 second conversation allows you to introduce yourself, your business and discuss who you are and what your business does.

After the formal speed networking ends, there is an opportunity for all attendees to continue to network over drinks and canapes. The RACV Club served up a delicious section of food and beverages.

The type of businesses that attend the Speed Networking event was a mix. There were business owners from different industries ranging from small businesses to large corporate firms such as the big Banks and education providers. There was quite a lot of business development managers at this event.

Overall, I’ve attended a few speed networking events over the past few months and I find them quite enjoyable.  It’s loud, fast paced and quite an interesting way to meet a large selection of businesses. It’s also a great way to perfect your elevator pitch.

Empowerment in the Age of AI: Event Review

I attended the Empowerment in the Age of AI event hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce on Thursday 31st of May.

The event was held at Pongo Labs on Queen Street from 12pm-2pm.

I wanted to attend this event to learn more about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how organizations around the world interact with AI. Artificial Intelligence is here, it’s now and its the future and we must accept this.

Arriving to Pongo Labs, there was a large selection of sandwiches, vegetable sliders, brownies and a coffee machine for all attendees to indulge in. The food was delicious and this served as a great way to mingle with the other guests before being seated.

We sat down to listen to the three key note speakers. The panelists included Johnathan Chang, Founder of Silverpond, Dee McGrath, the Managing Director of IBM Global and Professor Tim Miller from University of Melbourne.

Throughout the conversation, there was a live infographic artist, Luke Feldman who drew images on the backdrop screen to support the current discussions. This was a great addition to the event as the attendees loved seeing Luke’s drawings change and develop from topic to topic.

A lot of the attendees had introduced virtual personal assistants into their organisations. However I still believe that there is a huge value of having a personal assistant and face-to-face social interact in an organisation.

Overall the event was interesting however was more of a Q&A as the attendees spent most of the time asking the panelist questions. The majority of attendees already had their questions pre-prepared and knew about AI.

The event was well worth attending although I was hoping for the seminar to be an introduction to what is AI as well as time for the panelists to discuss their business and how they interact with AI. Instead of Q&A with the panelist.  I feel I did not really get to know the panelist well.

Australia China Business Council: International Education Forum: Event Review

I attended the International Education forum Delivering Value to the China Market on Wednesday 16th of May from 10.30am to 2pm.

The event was hosted by the Australian China Business Council (ACBC) and was held at the Westpac building on Collins Street.

Chinese students are the major source of income to the Victorian economy and Australia is the 3rd most popular education destination in the world.

The forum focused on the topic of International education and how we can best deliver value to the Chinese market.

The event begun with a selection of breakfast items such as fruit, pastries and chocolate cake.

The host, Ms Virginia Birrell, the CEO of the ACBC who welcomed the attendees and introduced the key speakers.

The speakers were Phil Honeywood, the CEO of the International Education Association of Australia (IEAA) and Rob Thomason, the Group Executive of Member Engagement and Education.

The keynote speakers discussed some interesting points about International students in Australian Universities and how the percentage is increasing each day.  This was followed by a Q&A panel discussion with the speakers Phil Honeywood, Rob Thomason as well as Judith Uren, the manager of International Education for the Victorian Government and Irene Yu, the Victorian Director of the Cultural Diversity Leadership at Westpac.

Overall, I found the event interesting and I’m glad I attended as the speakers discussions were intriguing.

The forum ended at 1pm with lunch being served and an opportunity to network with the attendees. The majority of the attendees were from leading education providers.

DM Forum: Dando and LinkedIn Present: Event Review

On the first Tuesday in May, Business Growth Partners attended the DM Forum hosted by Frank Chamberlin. The event was held at the Monash Conference Centre on Collins Street from 6-8pm.

The DM Forum is an casual after-work function that is held quarterly on a Tuesday evening throughout the year.

The presenters for the event were Steve Crough, Founder of the Dando, as well as Helen Hollins, the General Manager of Dando.  A digital agency in Richmond. The second speaker was Kae Hum, Head of Enterprise Sales for LinkedIn.

Kae Hum was a great public speaker and kept the audience engaged through his presentation. LinkedIn has over 550 million members globally. ! As majority of individuals and business owners have a LinkedIn presence, it was interesting to learn about the tactics for businesses to reach their marketing objectives through LinkedIn.

The DM Forum is always great to attend, Frank makes such an effort to connect individuals and businesses owners together. Every time I go, I meet a selection of interesting attendees who are at the DM Forum out of interest of the speaker and enjoy the great event that Frank hosts.

The sandwiches are a favourite and a highlight with the crowd.

There is limited time to network at the event – it is key to get to the venue before 6pm to have a opportunity to network with like minded individuals. The type of attendees were a lot of Monash marketing students as well as digital agencies. The key speakers tend to speak for about an hour and a half. In this case, make sure you get in early to network and to eat some of Frank’s sandwiches!

Welcome Back to the New Year Celebrations

Business Growth Partners hosted a Welcome Back to 2018 celebrations on Friday 16th of February.

The event kicked off at 4pm and finishing up at 7.30pm at our office in South Melbourne.

Similar to our successful Christmas/End of the Year event that we hosted in late December. Business Growth Partners decided to host these celebrations to start the working year off with some fun and networking.

As tradition, the prize was a voucher to the Kelvin Club, a heritage 150 year old private club located on Melbourne Place.

Kjetil Pederson from Exova was the winner of this prize!

We had a wide selection of food and refreshments available throughout the night.

All food was locally sourced from the iconic South Melbourne Market, located on Coventry and Cecil Street.

Over 50 attendees joined us to celebrate the beginning of 2018. The selection of businesses who attended including University professors, management consultants, architects, barristers, IT and web designers as well as engineering, law and accounting professionals.

We will be hosting various events throughout the year of 2018.

Business Growth Partners looks forward to an exciting and busy year ahead!

Reach Foundation Breakfast Review: ‘The Millennials’

The Reach Foundation hosted a breakfast on the 19th of November. The breakfast was located at Deloitte on Bourke Street.

The sit down breakfast was held from 7.30am to 9.00am. It was a small intimate breakfast which allowed all attendees to get to know everyone there and hear what we all had to say.

The attendees consisted of team members from Reach, including the CEO and Reach facilitators and various other small businesses.

The Reach Foundation supports young people to get the most out of life. Their mission is to encourage teenagers to believe they can achieve anything. Highlighting the issues and obstacles that a young person, aged 13-20 face daily.

The breakfast was run similar to a workshop in which the facilitator encouraged open and honest discussions.  One main focus of discussion was the next generation of leaders: the Millennials.
Millennials make up 30% of the workplace in Australia. We discussed millennials in the workplace, how to motivate millennials and how to understand their generational characteristics.

The facilitators and CEO also discussed the strategic plan over the next 4 years for the Reach Foundation. As well as the workshops and retreats the Reach Foundation host frequently.

The breakfast was a good selection of yoghurt and granola compotes, fruit, croissants, muffins as well as a choice of hot beverage.
