Start Up Grind Hosts Didier Elzinga – Event Review

By Business

This evening Start Up Grind hosted Didier Elzinga, Founder of Culture Amp. Culture Amp is an employee feedback platform that replaces the universally hated annual review meetings. The attendees predominantly operated their own Start Up businesses, coming from a range of industries, including pharmaceuticals, media and travel.

The major attraction of the event for many of the attendees, was the chance to learn about Culture Amp and Didier’s approach to start ups. Didier began his career working with Rising Sun Pictures, a filmography company specialising in CGI.

Culture Amp aims to improve the culture within businesses medium or larger. Often working with major businesses internationally. The Culture Amp provides a platform for larger companies to maintain an ongoing conversation with their employees. Focusing on performance, interactions amongst staff and identifying problems that have arisen in an efficient manner.

The audience were also given the chance to ask questions. Many of the questions related to the Start Up process, including how to gain funding and challenges that they may face. The standout question for me was related to the biggest challenge that Didier achieved during his time with Rising Sun Pictures. It was incredible to hear how Didier approached the issue of potentially having to cut staff numbers drastically during the fallout from 9/11. Didier made sure the conversation included his staff, as they were affected the most by the issue.

All in all the event provided an insight into the Start Up space and the importance of Culture within businesses of every level. While the attendance of this event was lower than other events hosted by Start Up Grind, I found the event was a great chance to speak to a number of people starting their own businesses.
