Rankin & Co: Women in Fashion and Design: Event Review

Megan and I attended the Rankin & Co ‘Women in Fashion and Design’ drinks and networking event on Thursday 3rd of May. The event was held at Misuzu’s, an authentic and delicious Japanese restaurant in the heart of Albert Park.

We were invited by Rob Roy Rankin, the Director of Rankin & Co, a law firm. At the event,  Megan and I met a range of his work colleagues. We were also introduced to Rob’s contacts and clients who had known Rob for years.

Rob often hosts these evening event throughout each year as it’s an opportunity for Rob to introduce some of his fashion and design clients to all the attendees as well as networking with like minded individuals.

The venue was a suitable choice as the event was quite intimate and relaxing. All attendees sat around a curved table sharing stories and enjoying delicious food and wine that Rob had organised for the night.

Megan and myself were fortunate enough to receive an attendance gift, a stila matte lipstick from MECCA which we were extremely grateful for.

Leadership Skills – How to Motivate and Inspire: Event Review

I attended the event Leadership Skills – how to Motivate and Inspire on Wednesday 18th of April.

The event was run by She Mentors; a space for women in business to come together to inspire, connect and support each other.

The event was held at Inspire 9 in Richmond, a co-working space in Richmond predominantly for creatives, entrepreneurs and freelancers. This space was a suitable venue for this after-work event as it was spacious and provided us with an idea of what working in a co-working space would be like.

The guest speakers were Kylie Lewis, who owns a platform where Kylie conducts consulting, coaching and workshops for businesses in social media, as well as digital and content marketing. She has had previous experience as the Head of Digital for Kikki K and is now an entrepreneur.  I was particularly interesting in listening to Kylie speak due to the fact that I enjoy Kikki K’s products and wanted to learn more about the brand.

The second speaker was Sherryn Bowers who is a women’s leadership coach focusing on building up our strengths and skills of women in leadership positions.

The attendees of the event were members of the She Mentor space that attend regular events, as well as small businesses and creatives. Sherryn attracted quite a crowd as majority of the attendees came to this event because of their admiration for her.

The two speakers discussed their success stories and challenges in the workplace. They both had similar views on the difference between ‘leaders’ and ‘managers’. They highlighted the importance of challenging yourself every day within your workplace as well as to not be afraid to take risks!

Melbourne Business Networking: The PM Club “Autumnal Networking” Event Review

On Thursday the 22nd of March, I attended the PM Club “Autumnal Networking” Event hosted by Melbourne Business Network. The event was held at the Courtyard in the RACV Club on Bourke Street.

The event started off with an opportunity to network. As you walked in you were given two drink tickets for the bar. This was shortly followed by platters of canapes that were brought around by waiters.

It was a great chance to be able to have a chat to the other attendees. The live music gave the event a relaxed feel. However, it was slightly too loud and made it difficult to have a meaningful conversation.

Following this, President of the MBN, Bev Friend, made a small speech about the importance of making valuable connections during networking events. She also talked about how important it is that we are happy at work. During her speech, Friend mentioned that she did not wish for attendees to swap business cards, rather, she wanted the crowd to have meaningful interactions. Unfortunately, this set an atmosphere that made it difficult to collect business cards.

As usual for a Melbourne Business Networking event, we played a few games that involved the coloured sticker on our name tag. As we paired up with people with the correct colour, we talked about ways to improve the happiness at our respective work places.

Primarily, the people that attended the event were employees of various Not-For-Profits, and a few people who worked in small businesses. Although these kind of games can make people uncomfortable, everyone enjoyed talking about ways to create happiness during work.

I would attend this event again, as it was a good venue, good catering and all the attendees were really nice. Bev Friend is a good host and always has something to say from the heart.

Victoria Law Foundation: Legal Laneway Breakfast Event Review

On Wednesday February 7th, I attended the Victoria Law Foundation (VLF)’s annual Legal Laneway breakfast in Hardware Lane, right in the heart of our beautiful city.

The event was set out as a large outdoor gathering for Melbourne’s legal community to catch-up and discuss how things were going at their firms and in their personal lives. It was clear that the event was for individuals who were already familiar with each other because business cards were a very rare sight. Handshakes and hugs were the networking tools of the morning.

Expectedly, the vast majority of the attendees were from law firms or were individual consultants. There were a few representatives from various government organisations and universities who have built up relationships with the VLF, and I even spoke with a second-year law student who was taking a very brave step.

I will not be attending another Legal Laneway event because it functioned more like a friendly catch-up between lawyers than an event to connect law firms to outside organisations.

Yarra City Council Lunchbox Learning Event Review: ‘Make Sales Leads Find you’

I attended the Yarra City Council Lunchbox Learning session on Thursday 30th of November. The topic of discussion was on how to make sales leads find you.

The Lunchbox Learning sessions are hosted by the Yarra City Council. They have been running for the past 4 years and are held at the last Thursday of each month.

The intent of these sessions are for local businesses to get together to share their knowledge, listen and learn to the speaker and to have the opportunity to network.

As it was a lunchtime event running from 12pm-1pm, attendees could bring their lunch to eat or there was tea, coffee, cold water and biscuits provided for all.
It was quite humid and the temperature was hot during the day so being greeted to a cold glass of water was a great start to the session!

I attended this event through my contact Umesh Ratanje from Brompton & Co.

The speaker was Nerissa Atkinson who is the Creative Director and co-Founder of The Revery, a Marketing Agency based in Richmond.

The topic was how to make sales leads find you, Nerissa focused on two aspects which were making sure your band appeals and knowing where your target audience is looking.

Nerissa discussed the importance of content marketing. Content helps convert your website visitors into customers.
For content marketing to be effective, it must be creative and insightful. This enables your business to build relationships and add value to your brand.

As lunch can be a busy time, the event went for 1 hour and a lot of attendees left exactly at 1pm to get back to work on time. Arriving about 15-20 minutes earlier than the event provides you with a good opportunity to network with the attendees before listening to the speaker. There were 7 attendees are the lunchtime event which provided for a small and intimate group.

The cost of the event is free. All Lunchbox Learning sessions are free and are worthwhile attending. It was an informal event, allowing the attendees to sit down, relax and listen to the speaker throughout a lunchtime learning session before heading back to a busy afternoon at work.

Women’s Leadership Breakfast Review: ‘Owning Your Power In and Through Overwhelm’

The event I attended was to celebrate women in business. I attended the Women’s Leadership Breakfast which ran from 9am-10.30am. The event was held in a boardroom at One Roof on City Road. One Roof is a co-working business space for women and provided a relaxing and bright open space for our breakfast.

The event was hosted by Kelly Tsagournos who is a development and transformational coach.  Her main focus is to empower and inspire women to thrive in their personal and professional lives.
Throughout these forums which Kelly hosts regularly. Kelly’s aim is to create a space for women who want to develop, grow and feel supported as well as making connections with like-minded women around them.

The topic of this breakfast event was owning your power in and through overwhelm. This session was to support women as we tackle the challenges, demands and opportunities that we face throughout our life. We started from the basics and discussed what the triggers and causes are of feeling overwhelmed, how we move through and manage this feeling as well as actions to be taken to reduce and prevent being overwhelmed.  Acknowledging and accepting that we as individuals often will feel overwhelmed throughout difference stages of our life is important.

The catering for the breakfast event was great. As the event started at 9am, I already had breakfast beforehand and was not expecting much food to be on offer. However when I arrived, there was a substantial selection of food! The selection included fruits, muffins and ham, cheese and tomato toasties which all were eaten up. Beverages such as hot chocolate, coffee and tea were also available.

There was not much of an opportunity to network throughout or after the event. The event was more of a informal group discussion where everyone had the chance to speak. It was a small, intimate group of women which provided a encouraging space to talk. Majority of the women at the breakfast had been to Kelly’s previous events before and were quite good friends with Kelly.

Australian British Chamber of Commerce Trivia Night Review: ‘Multimedia Trivia’

This event was hosted by the Australian British Chamber of Commerce (ABCC), celebrating their first ever trivia night.

The event was held at Spaces Richmond, a co-working space with a unique interior design on Church Street. The co-working hub currently has over 250 office desks. They have just announced that two new Melbourne locations in the City will open in late 2018. Located at the Rialto and the T&G Building both on Collins Street.

We attended the event, with our friend and team-member Duncan Buchanan, the Director of Adept Research.

The event began a 6pm and ended at 9pm. The first hour, attendees arrived and had the opportunity to network with other attendees.

The trivia began at 7pm sharp where all attendees sat in their teams of 4 on a designated table and created a team name. There was about 20 teams who had signed up to attend the trivia night.

The trivia was run by a program called Quiz Meisters. Quiz Meisters is not your traditional trivia. The majority of the questions asked were based on multimedia either listening to a song, watching a video or looking at an image. As well as interactive questions where team members had to stand up and move around.

Quiz Meisters provided for a fun and exciting environment which was different to any other trivia we had participated in before. The layout of the event at Spaces Richmond also provided for a informal, spacious and relaxing tone to the night.

The catering for the event was excellent. The table filled with rice paper rolls, pork buns, chicken sandwiches, sausage rolls and corn fritters. We were able to take a plate to our table and eat throughout the event. The refreshments at the bar included beer, wine, champagne and soft drink.

Although there was an opportunity to network at the beginning of the night. It was not much of an official networking event as some attendees came to the trivia night in Richmond to just relax and enjoy a night of trivia.

Highlight: The location was interesting and the event was well catered for.

Hot tip: The trivia is not your traditional trivia. Come prepared for an interactive and fresh approach to trivia.

VECCI Fast Forward Speed Networking Event Review

The Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VECCI) held its speed networking event on Wednesday 11th of October.
The event was from 5.30pm-8pm at Citadines on Bourke Street.

VECCI Fast Forward Speed Networking event is quite similar to a speed dating event where you sit across from an individual, you are given a total of two minutes to network with the business owner before moving onto the next business contact.

The attendees are the Fast Forward event contained a mix of business development managers, small business owners and relationship managers from corporate organisations such as banks and Universities.

The venue at Citadines had high ceilings and when all participants spoke at once, the event become very loud. Don’t forget to bring in a glass of water in as you are speaking quite fast and loud.
Overall, you meet up to about 20 people throughout the night.

There is the opportunity after the formal networking rounds are finished, to further network with like-minded individuals over drinks and canapes until the event ends.

Highlight: Being able to meet a selection of interesting businesses in one night

Hot tip: To remember to bring a lot of business cards to the event so you don’t run out

Marketing Womens Inc Breakfast Review: ‘Changes in Marketing’

This breakfast event was to celebrate women in marketing and ran from 7.30am to 9am.
The event was organised by the Marketing Womens Inc where it was held at Y&R Melbourne on Collins Street. The layout of the building provided a friendly and welcoming setting for the networking event whilst we listened to the guest speakers.

The guest panel were Margie Reid (Managing Director of OMD) and Teresa Basile (Former General Manager of Marketing, Communications and Digital at GM Holden).
The two industry leaders discussed the impact of the changes that are taking place within marketing today in businesses as well as discussing some insights into their businesses.

As it was a morning event, most attendees left straight away to get to work on time which provided with limited opportunity to network after the event finished. There was the opportunity to network with the guests who were seated on your table.

The catering for the breakfast was a selection of pastries, toast and bagels as well as fruit. Beverages such as coffee, tea and fruit juices were also available.

The Melbourne Womens Inc (MWI) have regular networking events, as well as a mentoring program which focuses on empowering women and connecting women through marketing. You can sign up to become a mentor or a mentee here.

VECCI Small Business Summit Review: ‘Keeping Small Businesses Competitive’

To recognise small businesses and jobs in Victoria, the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VECCI) hosted an event.

This event was held at Sofitel Melbourne on Collins from 10am to 12pm. The event featured a sit down breakfast where there was a small muffin selection and a choice of a hot beverage to bring to your seat.

98% of Victorian businesses are small businesses with less than 20 employees. The key themes and discussions of this event were to explore what we need to do to keep small businesses competitive and create sustainable jobs in Victoria for the future. Discussing the importance of growth within Victorian small businesses into 2018 and beyond.

There was a panel of three who shared their views on the Victoria Summit Forum. These three business leaders who were on the panel were Tarah Barzanji (Principal of AlphaBeta Advisors), Matteo Pignatelli (Owner of Matteo’s restaurant) and Ray Keefe (Managing Director of Successful Endeavours).
The panel members discussed their perspectives on how to keep small businesses in Victoria competitive, what needs to be acted upon to encourage sustainable job growth and if the current education and training system meet the needs of the small businesses in Victoria. There was an opportunity for the audience to also ask questions to the panel.

The attendees of the event were a mix of industry professionals and small business owners. It was quite difficult to network as was a seated event and there was not much time before or after the discussion begun to meet someone new at the event.
