Fresh Speed Networking Breakfast: Event Review

Lachlan and I attended the Fresh Business Speed Networking event on the morning of Friday the 13th of July.

Fresh is a networking community aimed at business owners expand their networks through relationship building in a empowering environment. There are 15 Fresh Hub’s around Melbourne and they host events every two weeks for members and their guests to attend. This event brought together all the Melbourne Hubs.

Lachlan and I arrived at the Metropolitan Hotel where the function room upstairs was set out for our Speed Networking event. Before the actual speed networking began, there was an opportunity to network with the attendees while making a coffee or breakfast.

We were quite impressed with the delicious food on offer at the Metropolitan Hotel. There was a various selection of breakfast items such as eggs, bacon and tomato. As well as a variety of fruit and cereal.  The catering was a real highlight for such an early morning start!

There was a guest speaker, Shaun Resnik from VitalMe. He presented and discussed the importance of active listening. This discussion was quite fitting as we were about to begin our speed networking. The room was busy and loud so actively listening to the business contact in front of you is very important!

Similar to other speed networking events in the past. There were two long tables where you are seated across from a business contact. There are 2 minutes allocated to chat and introduce yourself and your business to the contact in front of you before moving onto the next business owner.

One side of the table was Fresh Networking members and the other side was guests. As there was two of us, Lachlan and I split up so we didn’t chat to the same contacts. The Fresh Networking members all recommended that we joined each of their Hubs.

The type of businesses who attended were a mix. There were mortgage brokers, accountants, law firms, management consultants as well as business coaches, stylist as well as a behavioral specialist.

Overall, Fresh Business Speed Networking event was quite enjoyable to attend. The networking  environment is fast pace and fun. All members are welcoming of new attendees and are keen to continue chatting after your two minutes is over.

Rock your Revenue: Event Review

Maddie and I attended Rock Your Revenue on Thursday 7th of June.

Rock Your Revenue was a networking event, primarily about sales and the tips to improve your sales game for businesses.

The event was held at YBF Ventures on Bourke Street, a large co-working space designed for tech start-ups, investors and small businesses.

The event begun with an hour of networking and meeting like-minded individuals. Followed by a panel discussion on sales and tactics.

The three panelist were Sally McKenna, the Sales Director at HROnboard, Trent McLaren, Head of Accounting and Sales at Practice Ignition and Dean Paquola, the Sales Manager at Ento. I found Sally an interesting speaker as she spoke with more experience and had value to what she was suggesting in regards to sales tips.

The key speakers made an interesting points about being on top of your sales game. All three panelist agreed about being persistent and consistent when contacting your prospects. Touching base regularly is the key for a better conversion rate.

The type of attendees were a range of IT start ups and small business owners. Maddie and I met a range of small business owners. Most of the attendees actually had a personal relation to the key speakers and came to support their sons speak!

There was wide selection of Crust Pizza’s as well as drinks on offer which was a perfect way to end a Thursday night after work.

The event was a interesting one to attend, the catering was very good and I left feeling that I have learnt some new sales techniques. However I don’t think I will attend another event by Rock Your Revenue in the future.

Empowerment in the Age of AI: Event Review

I attended the Empowerment in the Age of AI event hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce on Thursday 31st of May.

The event was held at Pongo Labs on Queen Street from 12pm-2pm.

I wanted to attend this event to learn more about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how organizations around the world interact with AI. Artificial Intelligence is here, it’s now and its the future and we must accept this.

Arriving to Pongo Labs, there was a large selection of sandwiches, vegetable sliders, brownies and a coffee machine for all attendees to indulge in. The food was delicious and this served as a great way to mingle with the other guests before being seated.

We sat down to listen to the three key note speakers. The panelists included Johnathan Chang, Founder of Silverpond, Dee McGrath, the Managing Director of IBM Global and Professor Tim Miller from University of Melbourne.

Throughout the conversation, there was a live infographic artist, Luke Feldman who drew images on the backdrop screen to support the current discussions. This was a great addition to the event as the attendees loved seeing Luke’s drawings change and develop from topic to topic.

A lot of the attendees had introduced virtual personal assistants into their organisations. However I still believe that there is a huge value of having a personal assistant and face-to-face social interact in an organisation.

Overall the event was interesting however was more of a Q&A as the attendees spent most of the time asking the panelist questions. The majority of attendees already had their questions pre-prepared and knew about AI.

The event was well worth attending although I was hoping for the seminar to be an introduction to what is AI as well as time for the panelists to discuss their business and how they interact with AI. Instead of Q&A with the panelist.  I feel I did not really get to know the panelist well.

Rankin & Co: Women in Fashion and Design: Event Review

Megan and I attended the Rankin & Co ‘Women in Fashion and Design’ drinks and networking event on Thursday 3rd of May. The event was held at Misuzu’s, an authentic and delicious Japanese restaurant in the heart of Albert Park.

We were invited by Rob Roy Rankin, the Director of Rankin & Co, a law firm. At the event,  Megan and I met a range of his work colleagues. We were also introduced to Rob’s contacts and clients who had known Rob for years.

Rob often hosts these evening event throughout each year as it’s an opportunity for Rob to introduce some of his fashion and design clients to all the attendees as well as networking with like minded individuals.

The venue was a suitable choice as the event was quite intimate and relaxing. All attendees sat around a curved table sharing stories and enjoying delicious food and wine that Rob had organised for the night.

Megan and myself were fortunate enough to receive an attendance gift, a stila matte lipstick from MECCA which we were extremely grateful for.

Alibaba Group – Conversation with Daniel Zhang: Event Review

Megan and I attended  the Alibaba Group: Conversation with Alibaba Group Global CEO Daniel Zhang on Monday 23rd of April.

The event was held at the Plaza Ballroom, on 191 Collins Street, Melbourne. The venue was incredible and the interiors were stunning. We arrived to a red carpet entrance where attendees were able to get their photo taken with the Alibaba sign behind.

Walking down into the ballroom, it was quite interesting to view the various selection of products on show that Alibaba sell online including vitamins, Kathmandu jackets, baby powder formula, goat milk moisturizes, petfood and sunscreen.

The MC was Ticky Fullerton who moderated the discussion with Daniel Zhang, he was fascinating to listen to and so modest. The atmosphere was electric as all attendees came out of interest to listen to Daniel and the other speaks talk. Following on, we were introduced to four new high level panellist who discussed more about the platform and its use.

The panel included Christine Holgate, the Managing Director and Group CEO of Australia Post, Damien Gance, Co-Founder of Chemist Warehouse, Jessica Rudd, Founder of Jessica’s Suitcase and Maggie Zhou the Managing Director of the Alibaba Group.

The evening continued on after the discussions, were there was a cocktail reception with a big selection of food and drinks. The catering was delicious and some of the best food I have eaten at an event this year.

As it was quite hard to chat while we were seated. There was a chance however to network with the attendees during the cocktail reception. Majority of the attendees we encountered were either managers or business development managers from companies which sell on Alibaba.

Overall, we were extremely impressed by the turn out and set up of this event and hope Alibaba hosts more events in the future.
